Freshwater Mussel Survey:
Experience a day as a professional Fisheries Biologist
To be curious is to be human. It is our curious nature that leads us to wonder, ponder, and then learn. Curiosity is the organic building block of knowledge and is the key to new vistas of thought and learning. When you were growing up were you a curious child? Did you enjoy exploring the streams near your home collecting minnows, crayfish, bugs, and other critters? Have you ever looked at mussel shells lying along a river bank and wondered about them? Where do they live and how did they get there? How long does one live? How big can they get? If so, then this is an experience for you. Volunteers (1-4 participants) will spend a day in summer 2017 assisting fisheries professionals as they work to collect, process, and then return freshwater mussels to streams and rivers of the Allegheny National Forest.
The work will be completed on a mutually agreed upon weekday. Typical work days start around 7:30 a.m. in Warren and end by 5:00 p.m., though volunteers are free to leave early if they’d like. Individuals should dress for the weather, wear proper wading shoes with ankle support, and will be responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the job site. Plan to bring bottled water, your lunch, and some snacks. A lot of laughs and some great memories will be provided

Liberty Bathing
An 8" X 10" photo in an 11" X 14" frame. This is a photo of Liberty, Jamestown Audubon's resident Bald Eagle. Walking by I heard a commotion and found her taking a bath in the tub on the floor of her pen. Water was flying and she seemed to be enjoying the process. She was so engrossed I took many photos before she noticed me and I got this photo. She went back to her bath and after finishing up flew up to her perch to preen.
